E is for Euodia (Women of the Bible)

Blogging Through the Alphabet

E is for Euodia.

Scripture Reference:

Philippians 4:2

Meaning of Name:

Fragrant

Family Connection:

Unknown

Interesting Facts About Euodia:

  • Euodia may have been among the women who were praying at the river bank in Acts 16:13-15.
  • She was a believer in the church of Philippi.
  • Euodia was a co-laborer with Paul (Philippians 4:3).
  • Her name is written in the Book of Life Philippians 4:3).
  • She fell into a dispute with Syntyche, her sister in Christ.
  • News of the dispute reached Paul, who closes his Philippians letter with a plea to Euodia (as well as Synthche) for unity.
  • Euodia received help from others in her reconciliation with Syntyche.

What We Can Learn From Euodia:

  • We are co-laborers with Christ to spread the Gospel message.
  • It takes two to disagree; and it takes two in order to reconcile.
  • Disputes within the church can cause division if sides are taken.
  • Disputes within the church can take our focus off of our mission.
  • We are to agree with each other "in Christ", meaning not in our own way, but in and through Christ.
  • Take the help of others who are trying to aid in the reconciliation process.
  • Offer to help those in need of reconciliation in their broken relationships. We have the example of Jesus to help us do this His way, not our way.
  • Love each other with the love that God has given to us. In doing so, divisions will happen less and unity will take place instead.
  • As believers, we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us that will help us to do what's necessary to live in unity.
  • Have the attitude of Christ which was to give up his personal rights in order to serve others.
  • Unity in the body of Christ is essential in the lives of believers and is what helps to mark us as part of the family of God.
  • Are there any relationships in my life as a believer that need forgiveness and reconciliation?

Are you surprised by who I chose for the letter E in my Blogging through the Alphabet Women of the Bible series? Eudoia is not spoken of much in the church (or the Bible for that matter), but as you can see there is so much we can learn from her. I'm so thankful that God saw fit to include the tiny mention of her in Paul's letter to the Philippians. It was important enough to include and shows how much unity within the body of Christ is important to God. I discovered Euodia several years ago at a time in my life when I needed the lessons I learned from her and applied those lessons to my situation. I have never forgotten her and I hope you won't either.

Apologia Educational Ministries: What on Earth Can I Do?

Apologia Review

I was excited when the opportunity arose to do a review for Apologia Educational Ministries. This review covers the products in the book What on Earth Can I Do?, the fourth volume in the What We Believe series which is written with a Christian worldview.

Apologia has teamed with Summit Ministries in the development of the What We Believe Series. The four books in this series are wonderful tools we can use to help teach our children the essential beliefs of our Christian faith, as well as helping them learn how to use Scripture as a lens through which to view the world around them.

The products we are enjoying in our homeschool for this review of book four, What on Earth Can I Do?, include the following:

Apologia Review

What on Earth Can I Do? (hardback book) $39

Apologia Review

What on Earth Can I Do? Notebooking Journal
$24

Apologia Review

What on Earth Can I Do? Junior Notebooking Journal
$24

Apologia Review

What on Earth Can I Do? Coloring Book
$8

What You'll Find in What on Earth Can I Do?

The lessons included in this fourth volume of the What We Believe series will help your child understand what it means to be a "good and faithful servant" of God (Matthew 25:23). There are a total of eight lessons:
  1. Your Story or God's Story?
  2. Who Put You in Charge?
  3. Will You Be Found Faithful?
  4. Where is Your Treasure?
  5. Where Does Your Time Go?
  6. Whose Life Is It Anyway?
  7. Why Isn't It Easy Being Green?
  8. What Will Happen When the Master Returns?

The goal of this study is to help our children choose to put God first in every area of their lives. The ideal age for this series is Grades 1-6. The text is written directly to the child using a conversational, engaging style that will make the study of God's word exciting and memorable. It is recommended that you present the lessons in the order that they appear inside the book because each lesson builds on the ideas presented in the previous lessons.

The notebooking journal, junior notebooking journal, and coloring book are companion resources that help to create an environment in your homeschool where learning is fun and enjoyable. The notebooking journals are a fun tool to help your child capture in a personalized way the truths they have learned in what will become a beautiful keepsake. Included in each journal are lessons plans for you, all of the "Make a Note of It" assignments from the book (children are asked to write about what they've learned or share an experience that relates to the lesson), puzzles, mini books, additional pages for taking notes, as well as pages called Find Out More which includes activities, songs, and reading lists to further enhance your study.

For younger children, Apologia has created a 64-page companion coloring book to keep their little hands busy while listening to the lesson. Each picture included in the coloring book depicts a teaching or story included in the lesson that will help to reinforce what your child is learning.

What on Earth Can I Do? is a wonderful homeschool resource that you and your children will enjoy.

Each lesson has the following key sections:
  • The Big Idea: An introduction of the main topic of the lesson and a brief overview of what your child has learned up to this point.
  • What You Will Do: The learning objectives for the lesson.
  • Think About It: Thought-provoking questions that dig deeper into the short story and are used to measure your child's comprehension.
  • Words You Need to Know: Vocabulary words in the lesson your child needs to know. They can write the definitions in their notebooking journal section for vocabulary.
  • Hide It in Your Heart: Two specific Bible memory verses are included in each lesson that your child can write in their notebooking journal.
  • Integrated Learning: Throughout the text interesting articles related to the main text of the lesson are provided which are designed to help your child pursue the book’s ideas and concepts across the subjects of art, math, science, history, and more.
  • What Should I Do?: This section highlights the Godly character trait that your child should demonstrate in their own life as a response to what they've learned in the lesson. Tools are given here to help your child think about how to apply the lesson to their lives.
  • Prayer: The main body of each lesson is concluded with a prayer intended to help children acknowledge the gifts of God and thank Him for all He has done.
  • Parables of Jesus: The final part of each lesson is a story adapted from a teaching story told by Jesus.
  • Going Deeper: Questions that encourage your child to think about the parables of Christ and what they mean for us today.
  • House of Truth: This tool is a hands-on memory aid that helps to give children a concrete way of thinking about their lives within the kingdom of God. It's a visual model that can either be drawn in your child's notebooking journal, or can actually be constructed with Legos. Four of the lessons end with the addition of a new part of the House of Truth. Constructed on step at a time, as new concepts are learned, the foundation, walls, and roof of the house are added.

How We Use What on Earth Can I Do?

My son and I used What on Earth Can I Do? in our homeschool four days a week. I love that the lesson plans are included in the notebooking journal. I use these lesson plans to help keep us on track through our study.

First we do the daily reading together on the couch in our living room. Sprinkled throughout the pages of the book are the key sections I referenced above that we work on together in the Notebooking Journal after our reading time. You certainly don't have to do everything that is listed, and we don't just because my son quickly tires of writing. To help with this, at times I would have him dictate his answers to me and I would do the writing. He enjoyed the word searches and the crossword puzzles in the notebooking journal.

A Review from Grace-Filled-Moments.blogspot.com

My Opinion of Apologia Educational Ministries: What on Earth Can I Do?

I really love when lesson plans are included in the book! Apologia has included lesson plans that are flexible and adaptable to my family's needs. Some of the lessons have activities that require advance planning on my part. A list of materials is provided so that I can be prepared ahead of time for the activity.

I also appreciate how the Apologia Educational Ministries website provides additional resources that will help in teaching this course. You will find the link and password in the textbook in the introductory pages. It's a valuable source of information to help us succeed in our teaching of their course.

You can connect with Apologia Educational Ministries on the following social media outlets:

This study will help them choose to put God first in every area of their lives based on these biblical truths: God owns all things because He created and sustains all things; He has entrusted me with certain gifts and wants me to use these gifts for His glory; I can honor God by using my money and possessions wisely; I can glorify Him by investing my time and talents wisely; my body is not my own but has been bought at a price; God expects me to care for His creation; God will reward me for my faithfulness. - See more at: http://shop.apologia.com/what-on-earth-can-i-do/338-what-on-earth-can-i-do.html
I want my son to grow up with a Biblical worldview. I also want him to be able to give account for the hope that he has within him. It is our job as parents to teach our children Biblical truth that will help them walk as lights in this dark world. Apologia Educational Ministries offers products to help me achieve these goals. I have used their Elementary Science series, and was thrilled to be able to use What on Earth Can I Do?, book four in their What We Believe series. I definitely want to use the other three books included in this series when we are finished with this book. I highly recommend all of the products of Apologia Educational Ministries to families who want to build a Biblical worldview in the lives of their children. The books in the What We Believe series can be used as a homeschool resource, and I think they would also make great tools for family devotions where mom and dad can lead together.

C is for the Crippled Woman (Women of the Bible)

Welcome to Week 3 of Blogging through the Alphabet! This week we are focusing on the letter C.

Blogging Through the Alphabet

C is for the Crippled Woman.

Scripture Reference:

Luke 13:10-13 (NIV)
10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

Name Unknown:

She is only known in Scripture as the crippled woman.

Interesting Facts about the Crippled Woman:

  • She had been crippled by a spirit of infirmity in which she was bent over and couldn't straighten up at all for 18 years.
  • Although she was crippled, she was in the synagogue at this recorded time in Scripture when Jesus was teaching.
  • The crippled woman was a believer.
  • The crippled woman did not ask for healing - Jesus took the initiative to call her forward.
  • She was healed by Jesus on the Sabbath.
  • She praised God for her healing.

What We Can Learn from the Crippled Woman:

  • If at all possible, let nothing stand in our way of our assembling together with other believers.
  • Have a teachable spirit as a believer.
  • Jesus has the power to heal and set free.
  • Never give up for your healing!
  • Jesus sees us and knows our needs even if we never ask.
  • When Jesus calls us we should willingly respond.
  • Our immediate response to the wonderful things God does in our lives should be to praise His name.
  • When facing adversity, look up to Jesus and the hope He offers, instead of looking down and losing hope.

Golden Prairie Press Review ~ American History Curriculum

My son loves to learn about history, especially American history. Recently, as part of the TOS Review Crew, we were given the opportunity to review Digital Heroes and Heroines of the Past: American History Curriculum, from Golden Prairie Press. We have thoroughly enjoyed using this digital curriculum in our study of American history.

Golden Prairie Press Review

Items Included in Digital Heroes & Heroines of the Past: American History Curriculum

  1. Heroes & Heroines of the Past: American History Part 1 ebook: Lessons for the first half of your homeschool year.
  2. Heroes & Heroines of the Past: American History Part 2 ebook: Lessons for the second half of your homeschool year.
  3. Additional Materials: Printable timelines, coloring pages, videos, and more!
  4. Historical Skits ebook: Nineteen skits from the time period of Columbus to World War II that your child(ren) can perform. A great way to bring history to life!
  5. Sing Some History: Music is also a great way to experience history. Twenty of the songs that are mentioned in the book can be enjoyed in your studies with these audio files. Some of the songs included are Battle Hymn of the Republic, Yankee Doodle, All the Pretty Little Horses, and I've Been Working on the Railroad.
  6. Listen to Some U.S. History: An audio collection of MP3 files featuring 20 original speeches, poems, documents, and sermons that are mentioned in the lessons of the book.
All of these items were downloaded to my computer for our use. You will need a computer with speakers, a printer to print out the lessons (if you choose) and any of the additional materials that you want to use with your child, pencils, paper, crayons, and any other supplies to complete the suggested activities.

Price and Age Range

The cost for this digital American history curriculum package is $98.99. It is available in a print edition as well for the same cost. The ideal age range for this homeschool history curriculum is grades 1-6, but I feel that it could be used with older ages as well.

Golden Prairie Press Review

How We Use Digital Heroes & Heroines of the Past: American History Curriculum

I love to have pre-planned lesson outlines when we begin a study such as this. I was thrilled to find this pre-planned lesson outline from Amy Puetz, the creator of this delightful American history curriculum.

We use Digital Heroes & Heroines of the Past: American History Curriculum four days a week for our homeschool history lessons. I follow the suggested lesson outline which keeps us on task and able to enjoy all that this American history curriculum has to offer.

The history lessons are divided into two sections. There is a section for 1st and 2nd graders which is presented in  a larger font and is a basic overview of the topic. The second section is for 3rd-6th graders, and has the same topic information on a more advanced level. We start off our lessons reading the topic lesson in the age level that my son is in. Once the reading is completed, I ask my son the questions that follow to make sure he comprehended and retained what we read. Some days there are writing assignments. Other days there is a craft or a recipe to make. We look at artwork from the time of history that is presented in some of the lessons. There is so much to do to keep my son interested. Each lesson can take between 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete. Of course, you don't have to do all of the activities suggested, but they sure do make learning American history fun!

Caleb's Canoe Craft Project

Our Opinion of Digital Heroes & Heroines of the Past: American History Curriculum

My son and I really love using this digital curriculum package for our unit study of American History. Everything you need to have an in depth study is included - art, writing, geography, cooking, crafts, music, games, videos, experiments - it's all included with Digital Heroes & Heroines of the Past: American History Curriculum from Golden Prairie Press! I love that everything has already been planned and put together in an easy to use format. I love that this is offered in both digital and printed format. I personally like having everything stored on my computer.

I appreciate how Amy Puetz has done all the leg work in putting together all the necessary resources for a fantastic unit study on American history. If you love to do unit studies in your homeschool, I highly recommend using Digital Heroes & Heroines of the Past: American History Curriculum from Golden Prairie Press!

I encourage you to connect with Golden Prairie Press on Facebook where you can stay connected with all the latest news and happenings.

Writing in Cursive with Logic of English

There are differing opinions about whether or not to teach cursive writing anymore since computers are so popular now. I personally think it is a beautiful way to write. I've delayed the teaching of cursive writing to my son so that he could have a strong foundation in manuscript. I was excited when the opportunity was presented to review the curriculum offered by Logic of English. I chose to review the Rhythm of Handwriting Cursive - Complete Set since recently I've felt it was time to begin to teach my son how to write in cursive.

Logic of English Review

Items Included in the Rhythm of Handwriting Cursive - Complete Set

  • 1 Rhythm of Handwriting Cursive Workbook: This is a softcover workbook with perforated pages so you can easily tear them out for your student if you need to. My son is left-handed and doesn't like the bend of the spine of a workbook, so I always appreciate perforated pages in a workbook. It makes his life (and mine) easier! There is a practice page for every lowercase letter and uppercase letter. Four different line sizes are included on each workbook page so that your child can experiment with the different line sizes and choose the size that works best and feels most comfortable to him/her as they practice writing in cursive. Also included are pages of words using the letters learned.
  • 1 Cursive Quick Reference Chart: This laminated chart will last forever! It has all the cursive letters and the special wording used in teaching your child how to correctly form the cursive letters. This chart also contains the 11 Steps to Teaching Handwriting. This chart is a great go-to reference!
  • 1 set of Cursive Tactile Cards: I love these cards! There is a card for every lowercase letter, every uppercase letter, special movements used in cursive writing (swing, curve, etc.), and numbers 0-9. Your child uses his/her pointer finger to trace along the cursive letter formation as you instruct proper formation with the wording that is provided for you. There is a grainy texture in the form of the letter on the card that your child will "feel" as he/she traces along the form of the cursive letter with their pointer finger. My son loves this!
  • 1 Student Whiteboard: You can use this as you demonstrate how to write the cursive letters you are teaching. Your child can use it to practice writing the cursive letters before moving to actual paper and pencil writing. You will need to provide the dry erase markers and a whiteboard eraser.

The price for the Rhythm of Handwriting Cursive - Complete Set is $65.00. The age range for this product is ages 4 to adult.

Logic of English Review

How We Use Rhythm of Handwriting Cursive - Complete Set

This cursive writing program is so easy to jump into and start teaching your child how to write in cursive! We used Rhythm of Handwriting Cursive four days a week. Included in the workbook are suggested schedules for teaching Rhythm of Handwriting Cursive. I tweaked one of the choices I liked to fit the needs of my son. I focus on teaching 2 letters per week just because my son needs extra time to cement concepts in his mind and become comfortable with what he is doing. I've learned to let him lead in this area. It's less stressful for the both of us.

Since he already knows the sounds of the individual letters, I skipped that part in the "Steps to Teaching Handwriting" that are given in the workbook. This step would be very helpful for parents with younger children who are learning the sounds of letters. These steps and more helpful information for the parent is included  in pages 5-13 of the workbook. Other helpful information includes "Handwriting Tips," "Suggested Schedules," and "Ideas for Handwriting Practice."

When I teach a lesson, I use my pointer finger and the wording provided on the handwriting chart as I demonstrate on the student whiteboard how to write the letters we are working on. Then I let my son trace the tactile card with his pointer finger as I say the wording provided to help him remember how to form the letter (this wording is on the back of the tactile card and on the handwriting chart). We do this several times before moving to the worksheet paper where he practices with his pencil. We've had to place our cursive writing lessons on hold since my son broke both of his wrists in a scooter accident in our neighborhood.

Logic of English: Rhythm of Handwriting Cursive

My Opinion of Rhythm of Handwriting Cursive - Complete Set

I am really enjoying using this curriculum to teach my son how to write in cursive! It is very user-friendly. I love how I am given exactly what to say as I teach the various strokes and letters in my lessons. My son is enjoying his writing lessons as well. He loves the feel of the grainy texture of the letters on the tactile cards as he traces the letter on it with his finger. He likes to use the different sized lines on the worksheet practice pages until he finds the one that he's most comfortable with on the letter he is working on. I can't wait for him to get out of his casts so we can continue on with our lessons.

I highly recommend this curriculum if you and your child are ready for cursive writing! Want to look into it for yourself? You can use the links in my opening paragraph, and you can also connect with Logic of English on the following social media outlets to find out more about all of their awesome products!

B is for Bathsheba (Women of the Bible)

Welcome back to Week 2 of Blogging through the Alphabet! I'm focusing my series on the Women of the Bible. If you missed my post for the letter A, I hope you'll check out A is for Anna.

Today I'd like to introduce to you the woman I chose for the letter B.

Blogging Through the Alphabet

B is for Bathsheba.

Scripture References:

2 Samuel 11:1-27; 12:1-24, 28-31; 1 Kings 1:21; 2:13-25; 1 Chronicles 3:5

Meaning of Name:

The Seventh Daughter or The Daughter of an Oath. "Bath" means "Daughter."

Family Connection:

The daughter of Eliam, who was the son of Ahithophel. Eliam was an officer of David's. Bathsheba was the wife of Uriah, considered one of the most loyal of David's mighty men.

Interesting Facts about Bathsheba:

  • Bathsheba was the wife of one of David's main military officers.
  • Unfortunately, she was a victim of David's unbridled lust. (Through my study I learned that there are two different opinions as to whether or not Bathsheba was a victim or a willing participate of David's advances towards her. I will leave that up to your opinion after personal study of the matter.)
  • Bathsheba found grace to forgive David's sin against her.
  • Bathsheba was able to discern David's positive qualities.
  • Bathsheba went on to build a strong and lasting marriage with David, even after such a dreadful beginning in their relationship.
  • Bathsheba was a strong advocate for Solomon, her son.
  • Bathsheba won David's love and Solomon's gratitude through her actions that displayed Godly character.

What We Can Learn from Bathsheba:

  • God's grace can heal those who have been severely wounded by others.
  • We can choose to become better, not bitter, when hurt by others.
  • Like Bathsheba, we can model courage and grace after the loss of a child.
  • Those who have lost a child can hold on to hope for the future.
  • Relationships are redeemable when the offender accepts responsibility and repents of their actions.
  • People are redeemable when they express Godly sorrow over their sin.

Willem Drost, Bathsheba with David's Letter, 1654 (Public Domain, Wikipedia)

There is so much to learn in the story of David and Bathsheba! I hope you'll take the time to do your own study. I'll see you next Thursday as I introduce to you the woman I have chosen for the letter C.

Laurie
