Planted and Watered by the Word (Blogging Through the Bible)

Grace-Filled-Moments

Hooray, we have read the book of Jude! Today and tomorrow we are in Psalm 1 and Psalm 2. At the end of this post you will read about where we are headed next in our reading through the Bible adventure!

Here are my S.O.A.P.s since my post on Wednesday. I love Psalm 1 - there is so much truth in it! When we take time to slow down and plant ourselves in the Word of God and let His Living Waters quench the thirsting of our souls, we can be better equipped to respond to the noises of this world that tempt us to find our satisfaction in them. :)

Jude 1

Scripture: Jude 1:3 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.

Observations: Jude is writing this letter to warn believers to contend (fight) for the faith of the truth of Jesus Christ. He originally was going to write about the salvation they shared, but then felt led of the Holy Spirit to warn them against false teachers who had infiltrated the church and their need to earnestly fight for the truth of Christian faith.

Application: We have to be in the Word of God and know what it says to be able to recognize lies from false teachers.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I pray for my fellow Christian brothers and sisters in Christ as well as for myself when I ask that You would give us all a hunger and a thirst for the truth that is only found in Your Word. Help us to arm ourselves with Your truth so that we can recognize false teachers who would try to deceive us with their lies. In the mighty and powerful name of Jesus I pray. Amen!

Scripture: Psalm 1
1Blessed is the man (Blessed: having a sacred nature; connected with God)
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, (Counsel: advice)
Nor stands in the path of sinners, (stands/sits: to participate with)
    Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord, (Delight: having a high degree of satisfaction)
And in His law he meditates day and night. (Meditates: to spend time in quiet thought)
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water, (Planted: to put a seed, flower, or plant in the ground to grow)
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither; (Wither: become dry and weak)
And whatever he does shall prosper. (Prosper: to become very active, healthy, and strong)
The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. (the chaff is the seed coverings and other debris separated from the seed in threshing grain; something comparatively worthless.)
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Observations (additional): Seeds have protective coatings on them that unless softened (by water) will not allow the plant inside to spring forth and grow. Ezekiel 36:26 says God will “give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” Jesus Christ is our Living Water (John 7:38, John 4:13-15) and His Word is what we need to penetrate our hearts of stone and turn them into hearts of flesh that can be molded and shaped by His truths.

Application: As believers we are not to find our satisfaction from the things of this world, but from our personal relationship with the Lord. When we slow down and spend quiet time – away from the noises of this world – in the Word of God, we are planting His truth deep within our hearts that will spring forth into fruit that is healthy and strong. When we neglect to spend time in the Word of God, we become like dry leaves that are thirsting for Living Water – we become dry and weak instead of having the wells of Living Water springing forth from the depths of healthy and strong souls. Dry and weak, we are more susceptible to walk as the ungodly in this world.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for turning my heart of stone into a heart of flesh. Please continue to mold and shape my heart for Your glory as You use the truths of Your Word to penetrate it. I pray for a continual thirst for Your Word that drives me to sit at Your feet every single day soaking up the Living Water that can only truly satisfy the thirsting of my soul. In the satisfying name of Jesus I pray. Amen!

Today we are reading Psalm 1 and tomorrow we will read Psalm 2. Starting this Sunday, September 28, we will begin reading in Genesis. To get your reading plan that you can print off and keep in your Bible, please go to this post at Women Living Well. Courtney's plan is to use the Psalms as fill in throughout our time of reading through the Bible. :)
